Treatment of the older patients: integrated approach to age-related diseases, multimorbidity, geriatric syndromes and disability

Person in charge: Prof. Andrea Corsonello, MD

Clinical trials generally exclude complex older patients, making it difficult to apply evidence and guidelines per disease to such patients. The older population with multimorbidity and frailty increasingly requires a precision medicine approach that can optimise the benefits of treatments while minimising their risks. Indeed, the importance of physical and cognitive functional status in influencing the efficacy and safety of treatments in the complex elderly patient is recognised across numerous disciplines, including clinical pharmacoepidemiology, rehabilitation, nutrition and surgery. This key research area intends to produce and integrate innovative information on pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments in elderly patient populations with multimorbidity and frailty, also with the use of advanced analytical models, dedicated to the study of complex systems, promoting a precision medicine-oriented approach
