Since the early seventies, Casatenovo Hospital Administration for the Study and Treatment of Senile Bronchopulmonary disease has specialised in inpatient respiratory disease care. An approach to respiratory problems calls for ever-closer integration on an operational level among increasingly specialised fields.  We distinguish between diagnostic and therapeutic areas which are in turn divided into acute care (medical and surgical) and post-acute and chronic rehabilitative therapy. The experience Casatenovo has acquired in its nearly thirty years of operations confirms the international trend. In fact, the Centre has progressively expanded its areas of specialisation in respiratory care as improved diagnostic and therapeutic techniques have become available. In recent years, respiratory disease treatment has been characterised by closer integration with Intensive Care Units, Thoracic Surgery Units, and licensed Lung Transplant Centres located in Lombardy. Respiratory disease care has experienced a resurgence of tuberculosis infections due to new immigration and the increase of immunocompromised patients, as well as a veritable explosion of allergy-related respiratory diseases and the ever-present tumor-related diseases. As a result, the other multidisciplinary aspects of Respiratory Medicine cannot be ignored if the concept is to be fully realised. Respiratory failure in fact involves diseases of different origin such as neuromuscular, immunological and cardiological, then outlining a scenario that cannot be separated by a periodic update not only the equipment, but the same way of thinking and approach to the problems. The Centre has been accredited by the Lombardy Region (resolution n. 49159 of 17.03.2000) and is entered in the Regional register of accredited facilities.
